Mothers' Union turns 100

On May 15th we had our annual Cream Tea, with strawberries and cream. Our 100th birthday cake was made by Gill Miller and, at Graham’s suggestion, she used the Queen Mother’s favourite recipe, printed in ‘Families First’. Mary Witts made the delicious scones.

We were pleased to welcome Mary Earle, Wells Archdeaconry leader, and her husband; Margaret Hendy, Diocesan President and Janet Angle, Axbridge Deanery leader; also our clergy: Graham and Sharon, and retired clergy, Kath & Richard and Richard S. We also welcomed one Reader, John, and Churchwarden, Pat. We had members of Axbridge and Cheddar MU and Puriton MU, now closed. Fifty-two were expected, but we were a few short.

Margaret presented Long Service Certificates to Joan Brooks, Audrey Lomax, Mary Witts, Betty Board, and three are being sent to other folk. The entertainment was by Ray (guitar) and Des, members of the Somersetones. After tea Philippa presented Janet with a beautiful pink orchid and a shrub for our garden, ‘Andorra Aroma’, which has fragrant flowers, on the occasion of her retirement as Secretary after 23 years

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 17th June at 2.30 pm in the church hall. The speaker will be the Methodist Minister, the Reverend Steve Bennett.
