Mission to Seafarers

Did you know that there are 1.5 million Seafarers who risk their lives to bring us the vital goods we need to survive? Do you ever think about the challenges faced daily by those working far from home for long periods at sea?

Mission to Seafarers has teams in more than 200 ports around the world to be there when the seafarers need them most. The charity fights for the rights of abandoned seafarers, cares for victims of piracy, gives employment advice and financial help and supports seafarers experiencing the mental strain of life at sea.

St. Andrews supports the Mission to Seafarers at their mission at Portbury, Avonmouth. At Christmas every year we take them shoe boxes filled with goodies and useful items, along with woollen hats and scarves, and some donations of money, and are met with an unfailingly warm welcome, which all the seafarers who call there also receive. Last year we took 61 boxes, a great car full!

Please can you bring your filled Christmas shoeboxes to church on or just before Sunday, 2nd December, so we can take them in good time for Christmas? There are still empty boxes available if you haven’t got one. Thank you.

Our annual coffee morning on 29th September raised £150 for the charity, as well as £50 in donations for the mission at Portbury. Thank you to all who helped and to all who were able to support this event. Over £200 of Christmas cards and Advent calendars were also sold and these help raise awareness of the charity with friends and family in other places beyond Burnham on Sea.

Thank you for all your support

Lord God, we depend on you for life itself. We depend on seafarers for many of our daily needs. Watch over them, keep them from danger, befriend them in loneliness and bring them safely home to those they love.

Lord God, we ask your blessing on all who care for seafarers. Strengthen them when the hours are long. Uphold them when the work is hard. And grant them the vision to see in those they serve the likeness of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Prayer for seafarers and those who care for them
