Julian Group September 2020

20th September 2020 St Andrew’s Julian Group

Dear Julian Friend,
We had hoped to be back together in Church for our regular Julian Meeting in September but sadly this is not going to be possible. The dreaded virus is on the march again and we must continue to be vigilant and cautious. Never mind, we can still share fellowship and time together in the healing business of Contemplative prayer. In the words of the Namaste prayer,

When you are in the place in you where God is and I am in this place in me then we are one”, that is with God and with each other.

I am also reminded of that pithy statement about prayer attributed to Anthony of the Desert some sixteen centuries ago namely, “Perfect prayer is not to know you are praying”. This captures the essence of our Julian time together I think.

No instructions this time as to the suggested method of entering in and coming out of the Great Silence, just a few suggestions to quieten the mind and heart and a prayer going in and coming out.

Do join us please at 10am or as close as you can make it conveniently. Hold each other in our hearts and give thanks through the Holy Spirit for God’s closeness to us in this time.
With love and best wishes.
Yours, Tony &Liz

The Julian practice of contemplation has been described as practising the four “S”s:

Prayer “Going in”
Give me a candle of the Spirit , O God, as I go down into the depths of my being.
Show me the hidden things, the creatures of my dreams, the storehouse of forgotten memories and hurts.
Take me down to the spring of my life, and tell me my nature and my name.
Give me freedom to grow; so that I become that self, the seed of which you planted in me at my making.
Out of the deep I cry to you, O God.

(George Appleton. 1902-1993)

Breathe deeply. Use your Anchor prayer/mantra.

“Strike the thick cloud of unknowing with the sharp dart of longing love, and on no account think of giving up”.
(The Cloud of Unknowing ,1370)

Prayer “Coming out”
Nothing that happens can harm me, whether I lose or I win.
Though life may be changed on the surface
I do my main living within.

(Words written in the Bible of Selwyn Hughes founder of CWR)

So I pray that God who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in Him.May you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(Romans 15 v13)
