Christian Aid in Action

Soap. Masks. Hand sanitiser. Vital weapons against coronavirus. But in remote Benue State, Nigeria – an area ravaged by violent conflict, crop failure and HIV/AIDs – many families can’t afford these essentials. They can barely afford to eat.

Here, households are often run by women, orphans, and people with disabilities. Now, a new strain of Covid-19 is putting these already vulnerable lives at risk. We urgently need your help to distribute vital hygiene kits to those in desperate need of protection.

Kits include soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, hand sanitiser, face masks and other essentials such as nappies and sanitary towels. These kits are provided by Christian Aid, and cost £5 each.

Christian Aid is a Christian Organisation that insists the world can and must be changed to one where everyone can live a full and happy life, free from poverty. They work globally for profound change that eradicates the causes of poverty, striving to achieve equality, dignity and freedom for all, regardless of faith or nationality. They are one of the fourteen charities that make up the Disasters Emergency Committee in the UK.

Each year there are usually two fund-raising activities for Christian Aid at St Andrew's. One focus is during and around Christian Aid Week, which is held in May each year. This year it falls on 10th to 16th May and there will be Christian Aid envelopes available in church around this time. It will not be possible to participate in wider collections this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Our second major activity has traditionally been the autumn Quiz Evening and Meal. This could not happen in 2020, but a number of people had a meal in their own homes and over £170 was raised. Hopefully a face to face meal and quiz will be possible this November.

There is a small committee that organises Christian Aid events, the leader of which is Roger Miller. He can be contacted on 01278 784658 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The group is always looking for a few more active members!
