Burnham Bereavement Cafe Report 2017
This project is now in its third year and has proved to be a great success meeting a very obvious need in our Community. It was always the intention that this should be a Community project sponsored by St. Andrews rather than a St. Andrew’s project FOR the Community. The distinction may be subtle but it is significant because attendees must not feel any obligation at all to declare allegiance to St. Andrew’s Church, or indeed to Christianity for that matter, because that would be to miss the point entirely.
Reverend Sharon, our Associate Priest, heads up a committed Team of facilitators many of whom have joined the Team in the last year. We thank Sharon very much for her personal commitment to this project and her sympathetic and skilled leadership of the Team. BBC meets once a month on the third Sunday afternoon between 4 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. The Cafe- style layout and welcome cups of tea, coffee and cake in the back of the Church has proven to be a congenial atmosphere for our attendees to share, in utmost confidence, the pain and challenges presented by the loss of a loved one, or any other experience which ranks as a bereavement.
There has also been a gentle ancillary activity arising from BBC. Our Own Rachel Rowse facilitates a monthly lunch gathering at a local Cafe for participants to meet and enjoy the company of one another in a relaxed and connected manner. Thanks go to Rachel for this gentle extension to the BBC offering. Thanks too to all those who help to make BBC the significant Community resource it has become. If anyone feels called to volunteer for this work and is prepared to undergo the training and accountability regime attendant upon it, please speak, in confidence ,to Reverend Sharon.
